You enjoy the look and privacy of shades in your Santa Clarita home, but what exactly are you getting out of it? Here are 5 benefits of honeycomb shades for your home that can help you keep cool during the summer, save on energy bills, add color to the room you wanted, and more.

1. Honeycomb shades are a great way to block the sun’s rays in your home

Honeycomb shades are a great way to block the sun’s rays in your home, especially if you live in a hot climate. They let in some light, but they also block a good portion of the sun’s energy. And they’re quite easy to install.

For a relatively inexpensive price (around $20), you can buy some small, bee-friendly shades that block light. Depending on the shade, you might get a little more light than a mere blackout, but you certainly retain as much of the sun’s rays as you would if you had your curtains open.  Many people like to use 3M UV Safe Shades, but if you live in an apartment or home without windows, you can purchase beeswax blocks instead. Just know that beeswax blocks UV, too, so regardless of which option you choose, you’ll still be exposing yourself to some light. Next to going outside, getting dust and particles off of your clothes is a must for optimal sun coverage. (This is also why hand sanitizers work so well–they stick to anything and everything to prevent transmission of germs.)  You can also buy boat tackle shells to place over the bars of your windows, which keep in as much sun as possible.  What about those pesky curtains? Unfortunately, the beeswax probably hasn’t done much to help them out since it’s only been applied to the background of the curtain itself, not the actual fabric. They still allow a certain amount of light in, but more importantly, they trap as much of the sun’s rays as possible. Depending on where you live, you might even be able to stand directly in front of your windows instead of turning your back on it, and still see some light. Otherwise, your curtains won’t block enough rays to help you sleep well at night. But, hey, a comforter is free, so you can sleep however you want. Bonus: At least you don’t have to spend money on some kind of blackout curtains.

2. The benefits of honeycomb shades

The best thing about honeycomb shades is that they’re great for blocking out the light. They’re perfect for bedrooms because they keep the light out without keeping you in the dark. In most all of my photos, I’m wearing sunglasses indoors. I’m not allowed to wear sunglasses indoors in most places, so you can imagine where my mood is on summer days, since I’m usually trying not to do anything that might catch the sun’s rays. While I’m not supposed to wear them indoors, someone in the family might be. So, I’ve devised a solution to my pain point. Ever since I discovered these shades, I’ve been wearing them whenever I’m going to be outside. But, as I’ve mentioned before, I can’t wear them over my sunglasses all the time. So, I purchased this stone wool terrycloth Hemingway sunhat. I’m not a fan of hats, but this hat seems like it would be comfortable and allow me to blend in easily with my outfit. Because, just like my wedge-shaped sunglasses, these sun hats protect my face when I wear sunglasses indoors. Okay, the last statement might be true when it’s 90 and sunny outside and temperatures are high, but when it’s cold, it may not be. Since I’m wearing these shades indoors whenever I’m outside, I’ve been wondering how strong they are. When I hang them up and go out into the bright sun, they do essentially the same thing. I do not suffer from tinnitus like so many other people, but I did notice my tinnitus has gotten even worse during this pandemic than it was previously. With these shades, I’m not concerned about my tinnitus because I can block out all external sound with my glasses. But, when I set them down in the cool morning air, my tinnitus provides a noticeable interruption. I can turn on some music to drown out the ringing, but even that doesn’t work all that well.

3. Honeycomb shades can help you save money on energy bills

In tems of energy efficiency, honeycomb shades are a great option. They let in light, but keep out the heat. This means your AC won’t have to work as hard to keep you cool. Plus, honeycomb shades are a great insulator, so they can save you money on your energy bill. You have all different kinds of plants, stretches of grass, and flower petals on your balcony. This is not all you have right now. You also have strung-up lights, which don’t interact with the plants. Needless to say, having strung-up lights on is a no-go. The only thing that acts like a node for your light-controlling system is a simple strip hung from the balcony railing. Here’s how to put those lights to good use. A common light fixture idea for an entryway to your balcony is planters. These made for indoor living are made for increased airflow and can be mounted on a balcony rail or supported by the rail. Again, this idea is one for the home; it won’t scale up well for a balcony extender. Instead, you need something that can draw more light to your balcony, stay cool, and make it easier to hang lights. Instead of hanging reading lights, consider adding a cocktail of native plants. Native plants like Vietnamese morning glory or shepherd’s pipe rose will fill in the shadows between your book and the railing. They may not have the look of a $1,000 apothecary jars, but you get the idea. Therefore, adding these small native plants to your balcony will minimize the need for light switches or moving parts. Native plants will also help to keep the temperature in your home more consistent. It’s better to spend your money on something that lasts a few years. While your native landscape may look pretty for the first few years, they will need maintenance. Luckily, most methods keep your plants alive for longer than a couple of years. Humidity is the enemy of your plants.

4. Honeycomb shades can create privacy and intimacy in your bedroom

To create privacy and intimacy in your bedroom, you can use honeycomb shades. The honeycomb shades are made with many small cells that are placed on a honeycomb grid. The cells allow light into the room while the honeycomb grid prevents others from seeing into the room.

5. Honeycomb shades are flexible and versatile for any room

Honeycomb shades are a great way to add privacy to a room as well as some style. They’re very flexible and versatile. Honeycomb shades come in a variety of fabric patterns and colors, as well as multiple sizes. Honeycomb shades are a great way to add privacy to a room as well as some style.
